Site & Space Planning, Programming Renovation, Historic Preservation

Daniela Moebius was on the design team at Lassel Architects PA for the realization of this project.

In this project, the former 100,000 SF Dover Middle and High School were reprogrammed and revived into a multi-use community center. Originally built in 1905 and expanded in the 1920’s and 1980’s, the 2007 renovation included:

New entries, interior renovations and space organization, site design, renovation of existing gym, renovation of existing classrooms into offices, a fitness center and art spaces, community meeting rooms, human resource offices, a teen drop-in center and youth services.

A strong emphasis was placed on programming, usability, access as well as economic viability for the City of Dover. Close attention was paid to existing historic details and their restoration. The exterior brickwork was carefully restored. Stained glass windows that had been covered during the 80’s were exposed and restored. The windows were restored to their original window proportions and patterning using new energy efficient units. Trim details were repaired and lowered ceilings that had been installed during the 80’s to accommodate mechanical systems were strategically pulled back from original building structure to show off unique details of the original design.
