Rehabilitation and reconfiguration of five foreclosed properties in a struggling historic district to maximize quality, energy-efficient affordable housing units. The redesign was coupled with deep energy retrofits and a close collaboration with the NH division of historic resources to preserve the historic character of the buildings and neighborhood.

Extensive studies reviewed existing conditions of building envelopes, indoor air quality, heating, ventilation, electrical systems and plumbing fixtures for opportunities in energy conservation, improved comfort, indoor health and safety. All homes were insulated and air sealed to exceed code requirements.

Energy models estimated energy consumption avoidance between 50% to 70%. The graphs above show a graphic representation of the estimated BTU usage (British Thermal Units) before and after renovation. BTU’s were estimated using energy models based on field investigations and blower-door testing. Four of the five buildings achieved Energy Star ratings with HERS Index Scores of 49, 52, and 56.
